Hello!  This is Emma.  Mom has been very busy lately, so here’s something to read.  For writing class I had to rewrite that old fable, “The Farmer and his Sons”.  Here is the finished product.  Hope you like it.

Fruit of Their Labor

Old Jethro, the farmer, was surprisingly stricken by a bad case of colon cancer. He knew he was about to die, so he considered how his two sons, Jake and Bill would provide for the rest of the family, because the two of them were notoriously lazy. They were farmers at heart, but Jethro was sure they would be careless in tending the land. Then in a burst of inspiration he devised a plan which would show his sons the rewards of labor.

He immediately called them to his bedside and gasped, “Jacob, William there is a great treasure hidden in the fields. Please, grant my dying wish. Make sure the farm continues to prosper.” And with a final breath, he died. After the funeral, the boys rushed home, grabbed their shovels and greedily dig over every square inch of the fields. They were extremely frustrated to find no treasure. After calming themselves down, they decided that they might as well sow the corn. After doing so, they trudged home. No treasure for them. However, because of their thorough ‘plowing’, the field yielded an extraordinarily abundant crop, and the family survived comfortably. As Jethro looked down from heaven he could easily tell his plan was a success. His sons had realized that the real treasure was the fruit of their labor.

If you like it, please comment on it.  I want to be certain Mom didn’t just say it’s good because she’s my mom.

Live long and prosper!

You have a wonderful way with words! I’d be interested in hearing more. I’m home schooling my daughter, Sarah, the 5th grade and the assignment sounds like fun. I hope she enjoys it as well as you seem. Charming
