Ok.  We are here today to decrease homeschool stress  Alright?  Are you with me?

I Have Some Questions For You

Are you trying to teach your children science out of a curriculum, a workbook, something off the computer?  What I’m really asking is, are you regularly, say daily or weekly, trying to fit science into all of the other things you “think” you need to teach your children?

Do you think you have to do some kind of formal science with experiments and textbooks written for grade schoolers that require all kinds of supplies that you don’t normally keep at home?  Ugh. Can I just say, that sounds kind of awful.  You know me.  Miss Truthful.  Please forgive, but I just must!

How Do They Do It?

I don’t know how some moms keep up with teaching their children 6 or 7 formal subjects on a regular basis.  But I’m wondering, for instance, if they still have energy left for Mr. Big Guy?  That would be the husband : )  Or just energy to get dinner together, or……just……darn, energy to be nice.

Maybe this is just me.  But if you can relate, and if your answer to any of the above questions is yes and if you are NOT a science fanatic – then read on.

Throw out the books (or at least hide them from yourself.)  This is one area, in these younger years (and I don’t know, maybe the older years too, depending on the child) that you can just let life be the teacher.

Rosebud Tree.  Sooo pretty.

“OK.  Here is science class today children.”  We are all going outside to walk around the house and look at the plants.

Grape Hyacinth.  How about that texture.

In particular, we are going to look at the flowers that are just popping out because it is Spring.  Yeah.

And then, if we don’t know what they are, we are going to ask Daddy or Ma (my mama) because they usually know these things. (Not my forte.)

So we walk around.

Money Penny.  No flower here, but I was SO excited because this annual came back!  It is an annual, right?

We look at the details of the beauty that God put on earth and marvel at it.

Peonies.  Just a few weeks ago that was dirt.  Plain dirt.  And then….these shoots just come up out of the ground.  That amazes me.  I didn’t do a darn thing to make it happen.

Oh, you want to go look something up about that flower on the computer.  Sure honey.  Go ahead.

Dandelion from my 2 year old.

Oh thank you Luke!  I love it.

Tulips across the street.

Tulips across the street.

Oh yes, and did I mention that my neighbor across the street is a master gardener!  These are her tulips.  You should see the backyard.  It is a masterpiece.  Something out of a magazine.  Maybe she will let me photograph it and I can show it to you.  Oh!  Oh!  We could have another science class over there.  I love science.  (I definitely did not love it growing up.)

So anyway.  Does this make sense?  Doesn’t this seem nice and relaxed and kind of fun?

Ooooo.  The inside of the Pink Perfection Tulip.

And what about other science subjects that “they” say we need to teach.  The parts of the body?  Seasons? Animals?  Insects?  Nutrition?  Growing food?  Trees?  Space?

These things naturally come up in the course of your day or week or month.  Talk about it.  Check out a book at the library if you really want to or look something up on the computer.  If this is your child’s forte – trust me – they will run with it.  I mean they will outrun you and you can just hold on for the ride.

I didn’t take this pic.  I found it on the internet.  It’s calming isn’t it.

All you need to do is a little here, a little there and your babies will grab on to the areas God meant for them to grab on to.  Don’t try to force something.  Just notice your child’s bend (gift) and flow with it.

Ok.  Enough with the preaching.  Have a great day.  And if you are stressed, I’m tellin’ ya – Don’t do anything today!  Just relax.  Chill out.  Go to the park.  It will be ok.  There is always another day.

God Bless You and all your babies!

I found your site through another “Mommy Blog” and it is absolutely wonderful and uplifting! Kindergarten started Monday in our area and my daughter isn’t attending. I truly feel God has decided that we should homeschool, but I was freaking out a bit. Due to some great support and your awesome blog, I am back on track and know this is the right decision for us. Thank you for de-stressing me :)
God bless you and your awesome family!

    Anne,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I love reading posts like this and being able to help. Keep up the good work. Don’t forget God gave YOU that child for a good reason. YOU have something special that child needs and when they are away from you a large part of their waking hours, it is easy for relationships and behavior to deteriorate, and for others to become their major influence. Don’t hesitate to ask more questions. There is TONS of support out there on the internet. God Bless you too!
