Couldn’t resist using this photo of Sally :)
In the summer of 2010, I went to the dentist and, as it turned out, I had a 7mm pocket in the gum next to one of my molars. Anyone that has had periodontal work done, knows what a pocket is and that you don’t want deep ones.
A 2-3mm pocket is normal and healthy. A 4-5mm pocket means you had better tend to this or else it will lead to surgery, and a 7mm pocket means definite surgery.
Here is a primer on periodontal disease.
I’d been down this route before
At age 30 I had periodontal gum surgery for deep pockets in 3 places in my mouth. My grandfather on my mothers side had dentures at an early age. My mother had the same surgery in 3/4’s of her mouth several years before. Was it hereditary or just learned bad dental hygiene? Probably both. I CAN tell you I never flossed and only brushed once a day.
I had the surgery
It was awful, and then I became a tooth and gum Nazi! I flossed, used a proxy brush, and brushed well daily from that point on.
But….at age 37
After a c-section and the recovery, it was BACK! I had to have the surgery AGAIN. Ugh! I was so mad, but what to do? I chalked it up to raging hormones and recovery with pain meds where I know there were days I didn’t brush my teeth at all.
Fast forward to age 49 back in 2010
Another dentist visit. They say “You have a 7mm pocket. You have bone loss and you will need surgery.” Damnit.
Since that c-section so many years ago, I had gone my typical rebel-girl self, wholeheartedly into the natural world of healing where at all possible, loathe to take an antibiotic or any prescription.
I was raised by an MD general surgeon, what an awesome man he was, and married a man whose mother was an OB-GYN.
Click here for my take on the Allopathic Medical World vs the Alternative Medicine World and how these 2 worlds collided.
Back to the dentist and his proclamation that I needed surgery
I thought…. I am getting a second opinion.
I knew about a holistic dentist 90 minutes away. He took a look and said, I think you can maintain this pocket and do ok if you will use a waterpik daily, floss and brush well. Ok, well that sounds good. Let’s try that out.
Thieves Essential Oil
I had just started using essential oils for various health reasons about 6 months earlier. Supposedly, this company, Young Living, had some very good dental products and oils, called Thieves, that others thought would be helpful. I needed something good, so I gave it a try.
So for the next 3 months, here is what I did:
I flossed once a day with the Thieves floss.
I used the proxy brush (as I had for years before.) This is taking flossing to the next level, pushing the brush between molars that have bigger spaces between them. I have 3-4 spaces where I use the proxy brush. Just a few swishes through each space with a little water on the brush. (These are not my teeth :)
Then I used the waterpik. I prefer the little massage tip that usually comes with the waterpik and would use that to get in close to the gum. I used it between all my teeth.
For the first half of those 3 months, I added a capful of this essential oil product to the water in the waterpik. The holistic dentist carried this in his office and recommended it. The oils in it are peppermint, thyme, cinnamon, eucalyptus globulus and lavender, plus it has some other carrier ingredients.
After I ran out, I put 3-4 drops of Thieves essential oil in the water. Since learning about the efficacy of these oils, I’m convinced using Thieves oil the entire time would have worked equally as well. The oils in Thieves are clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiate and rosemary. There are no other ingredients.
Thieves gets its name from the days of the Bubonic Plague in Europe
Here is a wonderful link explaining in detail the history of Thieves. And here is a link explaining a little more.
This is the short story. The perfumes of that day were essential oils. The perfumers knew the healing properties of the oils. In Marseilles, France, some applied the correct oils and went house to house robbing the people who had died from the plague, without getting sick themselves. When questioned, these were the oils used.
After the waterpik, I brushed well with the Thieves Ultra toothpaste.
And finally, I used the Thieves mouthwash.
After 3 months I went back to my hometown dentist
I was expecting that the pocket would still be 7mm, but that I was maintaining it and it would look healthy.
Surprise!
To my great surprise (and I think my awesome hygienist’s as well) it had healed back to a 3mm pocket! Totally normal! Wow! How exciting is that!
What about the bone?
She reminded me that we did not know about the bone loss though, and that it could still be a problem.
X-rays. Too many. Not good.
Since X-rays are not good for us (radiation) (this is just my crunchy opinion – I know some disagree and I respect that :) I did not want to do more of them so soon, so I just prayed and said I’m going to assume the bone is fine and we can X-ray again sometime in the future.
We took an X-ray 2 years later in October 2012
And that bone completely regenerated itself! Aren’t our bodies amazing! They were made to heal on their own if we will just get out of the way and do things to promote that healing.
Below are the pictures of the 2 X-rays
Notice in these first 2 pictures (March 2010) the bone area between the 2 bottom teeth (In the right photo, it is the 2 bottom teeth to the left. Those are the same 2 teeth, just a slightly different angle.) There is a very slight shadow in the bone next to the right tooth. See it? The picture on the right shows it better. That is bone loss.
In these second 2 pictures (October 2012,) again look at the bottom 2 teeth (And again, in the picture on the right, you are looking between the 2 teeth to the left.) That area is solid bone. No shadow.
This shouldn’t be surprising at all
We’ve all heard many stories about bone, organs, cells healing, regenerating, etc. I guess its just surprising when it happens to you :)
A Believer
I am now a believer in the healing power of these essential oils that God put on this planet.
I had to see real facts like this and now after 3-4 years, I have seen several more in me and in others.
Soon I will tell you a few other stories about how essential oils have worked for us.
- Getting rid of headaches.
- Healing cuts and burns.
- Reduction of scar tissue.
- The elimination of parasites from our daughter Sally’s gut right after we brought her home from Ethiopia.
- And the biggest and most significant, the elimination of my lifetime environmental allergies – trees, grasses, dust mites, mold, cats, dogs, etc.
Let me know if you have questions. I’m happy to help!
Message me if you’d like to order YL products and be in my private YL Facebook group.
New to YL and only have Thieves in EO form. Until such a time as I can afford it how can I use it to help my teeth?
Hi Jenny
Are you having any specific problems? If it were me, I would use several drops of that oil in a waterpik daily. I would put a few drops in a little water and gargle and/or swish with it like mouthwash. I would make my own toothpaste. You can google around and find recipes for homemade toothpaste with baking soda, coconut oil, things like that. And add a few drops of the oil to that toothpaste. Also if you have areas that hurt in your mouth, along gums, etc., as often as you can, I would put a drop of oil on my finger and place/rub/apply to that spot in your mouth. I hope that helps you. As you can see, there is ALOT you can do with only that bottle of oil.
I have cavities between 2 teeth in 2 areas of my mouth where some fillings fell out. Just don’t have the $$$ for a dentist visit now. Are there some oils I can use to keep the cavities from getting worse?
I am signed up under Catherine Rott.
Hi, Allison & Carolyn!
The Thieves protocol Allison outlines is excellent. Diet plays a huge part, getting enough fat in the diet to utilize the nutrition contained in the essential oils is a very critical part, that is why using raw butter, raw cream, raw milk and fermented cod liver/butter oil is a MUST!!
Shalom,
DrC
What brand is fermented cod liver oil? There have been times a customer has asked for fermented cod liver oil at the HFC and I have looked all over the store trying to find some but haven’t been able to.
Hi Carolyn,
Basically, what I have outlined here with all of the Thieves products is what I would use. I might put a drop of oil right on the area where the cavities are too, AND I agree with Catherine. Also, I would explore the website of http://healthyhomeeconomist.com She has some wonderful posts and had one on cavities I remember reading quite a while ago. She talked about the fermented cod liver/butter oil. The brand is Green Pasture’s.
Blessings!
I think the correct web address is: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/
Thank you!!
The best fermented cod liver oil I have found is from a company called GREEN PASTURE and I personally have had to order it via mail order as so many health food stores dont keep it in stock. They even have flavors :)
Yes, I have ordered from them. Good stuff!
I carry greens pasture cod liver oil at Manning Family Wellness at a very low price. Let me know if you ever want to order any. Our wellness clinic recommends Green pasture! My number is 2062409317.
Thanks!! Good to know!!
Hi Allison!
I’m DYING to know what you are doing for the allergies!!! My kiddos (especially Fin) really struggle and Fin tends to move in to some asthmatic symptoms. We even use an inhaler on the bad days which I would like to ditch completely!! Would love any and all recommendations you have!!!
Thanks :)
Robin
Robin,
I will give more details later, but I will tell you now that I am experimenting with Emma, my 15 year old who seems to have the same environmental allergies as I did and I am having her drink a packet of NingXia Red daily and Im giving her a raindrop monthly. Also, working on going wheat-free around here or at least using the Einkorn wheat. I think wheat can be a big issue, along with diet in general. I’m going to anticipate improvement for her after 9 months or so of doing this. I may even increase the raindrops or maybe just on her feet. We will see. Hope that helps for now :)
I started using essential oils in my dental routine about two years ago (from Living Libations) and have reversed the formation of a couple cavities!! Love it, and will definitely be looking into this Thieves oil….
Very cool about the cavities. I’m so glad to hear that. What did you do exactly? Put a drop or two directly on the cavity? How many times a day? Yes, Thieves is amazing!
I just changed from “natural” toothpaste from the supermarket to the essential oils from living libations. She has a couple of blends for dental care. I also added some clay powder and made it into a paste with some coconut oil..just brushed with the clay and oils…and of course flossed like a mad woman.
What water pik do u use?
The brand is “Waterpik.”
Where can I purchase the thieves essential oil? And about how much does it cost?
You can buy it at http://youngliving.com. You will need someone’s number to plug in. Mine is #1130505. You can buy it retail that way. If you want to become a member (which costs $40 minimum and you get peppermint and lavender oil which can be used for multiple issues) then you will be able to buy at wholesale costs which are 24% less than retail. If you just want to try it, maybe buy it retail. If you think you really want to get into it and buy more, go the wholesale route. There are no commitments other than buying $50 over the course of the year to keep the wholesale membership. Let me know if thats confusing or if you have questions. Lots of resources out there that help in starting out on healing naturally using essential oils.
Hi Allison,
I just found out I have advanced gum disease. I am advised to get my wisdom teeth pulled and look into laser gum treatment. I have been roaming the internet and found you and would like to try what you did. I am also thinking of using a hydrofloss instead of water pik and the thieves. What do you think and how long would you recommend I give it? Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Mona
Mona,
Forgive me for just now responding. Life, ya know! As I am not a dentist, I am obviously not prescribing anything here. If I got this diagnosis, the first thing I would do is start using that hydrofloss irrigator (or waterpik – both seem to do the same thing – get the one that looks like it does it best!) I would add the drops of thieves to the water when I used it. I would do what I say in this blog post about using the thieves floss, toothpaste, and mouthwash and I would be taking a drop or two of thieves oil itself and rubbing it on my gums twice daily at least. While I was waiting to get those items, I would search for a holistic dentist that I liked or got a good referral from and get a second opinion. If he/she thinks you are ok to try the essential oil/irrigator route for several months to see what happens, then I would do that. Where are you located because I have a friend who went to St Louis and found a really good holistic dentist there, but they are not hard to find. Google it! And God bless in the healing journey. Remember we have been raised to want a quick fix for anything and sometimes healing naturally takes longer than we are used to. In addition, make sure you are on a good healthy diet. I always recommend people peruse around the website http://healthyhomeeconomist.com She has great info on teeth issues, how to eat healthy etc. Let me know if you have any more questions.
I have gum infection in 3 different spots. Been working on them for several days with bentonite clay and hydrogen peroxide. Also been using water pik with just plain water and listerine. I am planning to incorporate essential oils sooner or later but have delayed because the company recommends not to. Please let me know how long you have been using essential oils so I can at least expect my machine to last as long.
Hello. Are you saying the company that makes the waterpik recommends not to use the essential oils with it? Once I got my gums healed (which took 3 months of the regimen that I outlined in the post) I have not used the waterpik at all. My current routine is just floss, proxy brush, brush and mouthwash (all with the Thieves products) and that has maintained things just fine for a year or two now. For me I just added the waterpik with the oil when things were at their worst. It certainly lasted the 3 months and still would work. It can just get sort of a film inside the water compartment because of the oils. Honestly, I would use the oils in the waterpik and not worry about ruining it. The cost of the waterpik is much less than the cost of dental work that might be needed in the future. God bless in getting your gums healed!!
Thanks Allison. I agree with everything you say and in fact have been using the oils in water pik. The water pik people claim that essential oils will eat away at the plastic and strongly recommend not to use them.
I have also been oil pulling over the last couple of weeks which has also helped quite a bit. For those not familiar with op just do a simple google and you can read about all day long.
Hi Alison! I happened to stumble upon your post about periodontal disease and how you used essential oils to somewhat reverse the effects and I cannot tell you how long I’ve been trying to search for something like this! My boyfriend has been struggling with periodontal disease and the pain that comes along with it since the beginning of February. He’s tried just about everything from healthy silver supplements and toothpaste to coconut oil to buying a WaterPik and nothing seems to work! I feel so bad for him because I know it causes him a lot of discomfort and pain so I’ve been looking and searching for something that I can try to refer him to! I’ve read up on essential oils before, but wasn’t quite sure about them because I hadn’t seen any reviews on anything that seemed relevant to his problem. My question would be about how long did it take for you to see an improvement with the essential oils? Would you happen to know if there were any oils in particular that would have specific healing areas? I’m going to keep reading up on them and suggest that he read your review on the matter and I thank you so much for posting about this, it’s extremely helpful!! :)
Yes, it took 3 months from the time I started the regimen to when I went back for the checkup and the gum was all healed. Then later (I think the post says exactly how long) I had the xrays and the bone had also healed. The essential oil I talk about (“Thieves” blend made by Young Living) is the one for this issue. It works for many other issues too, but it is definitely the one to use for this. God bless!
Hi Allison: I think God led me to your site, what you have written about your mouth is EXACTLY what has happened to me in the past and is happening to me now….I have surgery looming again and don’t want to go through it EVER again. The minute I read it I ran for my Thieves and used my little brush inbetween the area with the deep pocket. I have a waterpik and will be experimenting with your regimen. I can’t wait to try it and hopefully have a surprise for the dentist, I bet she doesn’t ask how I did it, we’ll see. I’ll respond back with results after three months. Thanks so much for this information!
Sorry! Cyberland caused me to miss some blog comments. How’s it going with the essential oils?
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with so many people. I am almost in tears knowing that there is hope for me. I just went to the dentist this morning and heard a string of “4, 4, 4, 4” in regards to the pockets surrounding my teeth. The first recommendation was laser treatment. Being a holistic mom, that is not and cannot be a ‘first option’ for me. I keep telling myself there HAS to be a cheaper, less invasive and painful way to heal my gums naturally. Thank you for sharing your experience… I’m going to pin this on pinterest and refer back to it frequently as I customize my own game plan to get my gums back on track! Thank you again!
So sorry to be responding late. Something in cyberland caused me to miss a few blog comments. So glad you going to try it! Im a firm believer. Let me know what happens!!
Thanks for this info, I am going to try it, but do you have any advice on how to apply the oil of Thieves to the gums of my cat. She has gingivitis. I cannot afford to take her to the vet for a clean up and would like advice on how to treat this condition myself.
I would go to YLSearch.com and use that as a search engine to look for info on the cat. I know you can use these oils with animals and there a number of books written on it. I have not done it personally though. BUT, if it were me, I might dilute it in a little coconut oil and rub it on. Do the search though and see what you find. :)
Hello, Allison. I am so glad I found this article. I am in a pretty desperate situation. I was told I need pocket reduction surgery because I have bone loss. And that is for my whole mouth :(( I come from a country where we did not have floss growing up (thanks to the communist regime) so I started flossing in my 30s!! I haven’t even had my teeth cleaned until my late 20s because my dentist never recommended it. If only I knew then all the stuff I know now…. Anyway, I am going to try what you recommended in this article. I prefer a holistic approach myself and even if I didn’t, I cannot afford to pay for pocket reduction surgery. I really hope it works for me because I would hate to lose my teeth :( I also have a question…. maybe someone here knows. Ever since my last cleaning which was a year ago, there is black stuff depositing on the back of my teeth and getting to the front of the teeth too. I never had this problem before. Usually it was white calcareous-looking deposits. I floss and brush, but I can’t seem to remove it. Is there anything I can do until I can get my teeth cleaned again? Thanks!
Christie- I hope this works for you! God Bless! Im not sure about the black stuff.
Hello Allison
I have been using and recommending Theives Oral Health Products for my clients for several years now! I was so excited to see your xrays! I know bone and gum tissue regenerates once you eliminate the bacteria load, eat healthier and take some supplements. Very few dental hygienists and dentists understand this! Keep spreading the good word!!
Tammy Gouweloos, RDH
ps you may want to omit this part-did you get the root canal tooth fixed as there was decay on the back of it?
Hi Tammy
So great to hear from a dental expert! Thanks for the encouragement! Actually I had the root canal removed recently Im very thankful to say! I went to a biological dentist and had all the silver fillings removed. Had been wanting to do that for years. :)
hi want to get oil for gum tissue had dental implants and it formed scat tissue around gum what do u recommend
I recommend everything listed in this blog post. Have been having website issues so Im sorry Im just now replying. Let me know if you need more help.
Thank you so much for this info..it’s encouraging. I already know the wonders of Thieves essential oil and I’m going to get on it and see if I can avoid even needing the next step which my dentist says is root planing…
Great! Hope it goes well!!
I love essential oils they’re a really good tool. I was unaware of this great benefit though I’m going to have to give this stuff a try and see how that goes. Seems to have worked well for you anyways.
Amazing stuff!!
I hope some as in one or two of the oils will work for me. Essential oil is generally extremely expensive and if it were possible for me to afford everything you’ve listed, I’d be able to afford to see a Periodontic surgeon. Great to hear something worked for you! :)
It isn’t always hereditary or due to poor hygiene so people shouldn’t blame themselves. One of the primary causes is shifting of the teeth, as in braces! That’s what happened to me. Again, very happy to hear you and others found something that works. Best wishes.
Hope you find what helps. These oils are much much cheaper than the periodontal work I would have needed. :)
Hi Alison,
I am 30 years old and dealing with the same issue as you have. It comes genetically and I’m hoping to solve the issue before resorting to surgery. Most of my pockets are 6 mm deep . I’ve been able to fight of the bad bacteria but now my cells in the pocket need help to regenerate.
I’ve done some research on the thieves but unable to find a website that supports Mail to canada. Any chance you can help me.
Thank you sooo much,
Laurel
How is going Laurel? Doing better I hope!!
I have been diagnosed by my dentist with paradontal disease .. I was grinding my teeth ( under unusal stress level at the time).. pushed out a bottom tooth slightly , and loosened it .. She did Xray and said I needed surgery.. Brought some thieves of Marseilles , and haver started to notice that the tooth is already tightening up a bit , and you can no longer wiggle it back and forth with your finger.!
Thanks for your encouragement… if you have any more ideas on this please let me know…Where can I get the tooth Past and mouthwash..?…+ God Bless You For Your Help and Encouragement…..!
Thanks Again … Brian…..
Hi Brian,
So sorry to just now be replying. Been having issues on the website. Im glad this helped you. The post does say where to get the products. But head on over to http://YLEssentialTruth.com and that explains everything in detail. There is also a contact page on there if you have more questions and Im happy to help further. God bless!!
hi Allison
Please let me know how many drops of thieves per 8 oz of water that you used for waterpik. Thanks.
Hmmm, Id say around 3-5. In addition, I always put a drop of thieves on my finger and rub onto any spots in particular that are bothering me or just don’t feel quite right. Keep it up!
just found this page ! phew x what a relief to read so much hope !
and thank you Allison – is it ok for me to use your number with forever living too ?
I need the mouth wash and other products !
thanks once again x
Yes you sure can. Its called Young Living by the way. # is 1130505. God bless!
