Homemade Beer Bread

Homemade Beer Bread

Ok ladies.  Let’s talk about men for a moment.  The truth is, they are really pretty simple.  Or maybe I should say one-track mind.  That isn’t a knock.  It isn’t bad.  It’s great.  It’s how God made them so they could really focus on one thing and be successful, whether it is to win the battle, spear the bear, protect their woman, etc.

We were given the gift of multi-tasking because we have many children around our feet, we are cooking, training, teaching, nursing, fixing, etc.

The Big Three

So, what are the 3 big things we must all give our husbands if we are going to be successful as a wife?  Do you know?  It took me quite a while to find this bit of wisdom.  Here it is:

FOOD, SEX, RESPECT

And not necessarily in that order.  Whew!  Can’t believe I just said “sex” on my website.  Ok.  Get over it Allison.

Today We Are Going To Talk About Food

And ladies, this is soooooo important.  For the most part, if a guy doesn’t have a good meal on the table when he comes home at night, it is going to make him grumble inside and it is NOT going to be good for the relationship.  You might not see it.  Maybe he is just being nice because you have had your own hectic day, whether you work outside the home or not.  But, I promise you, a bit of discontent is brewing inside him.

Get Rid Of The Chip

In this feminist culture, we women get a chip on our shoulder because we think we are working just as hard as he is and so why should we have to do these domestic chores by ourselves.  If we keep thinking that way, we can probably kiss a good, fulfilling marriage goodbye.  Getting some good food in your man, consistently, (not to mention the sex and respect) will very likely make him want to help you in areas that would speak to your heart.

But Back To Food

This is an area that I hate is not my favorite!  I’m trying to be nice here.  I love to make a big production for a dinner party with 3 days to plan it, (actually that was probably pre-children) but the daily grind of getting 3 meals a day together is just, I have to say it again, a DRAG.  But I know how important it is.  Or rather, I should say, it has taken me years, yes, years to get this simple fact — that it is important – solidly in my brain.

Fuel

The truth is, I could easily just look at food as simply fuel.  Just get it in your belly and get on with what we were really meant to do.  But…..that just won’t work.

So, guess what.  I’m always looking for the easy way out in getting a decent meal on the table.  (As my girlfriend says, we are training our girls now so we can work ourselves out of a job – what great wives they will be! – Oh don’t worry.  My husband is a fantastic cook and our sons will be too.)

This Is So Easy!

So, today I am going to show you how to make Beer Bread in a snap and it is so good!!!   Put it with a great homemade soup that has been in the crockpot all day and you’ve got a wonderful meal.

In these pictures I doubled the recipe for 2 loaf pans.  But I’m giving you directions for 1 loaf of bread.

Beer Bread

Mix together:  (Just use a big bowl and a spoon.  No mixer needed!)

1/2 cup sugar (I used sucanat here, a more natural sugar)(You can also use maple syrup)

Sugar (This is sucanat I use that I buy in bulk)

12 oz beer (if you use dry sweetener like sugar, sucanat, etc add another 1/4 cup liquid – beer or water)

Homemade beer a friend gave us.  Yummy.

You want the sugar to dissolve in the beer.

Then mix in:

3 cups flour (this is fresh ground, but use any whole wheat or white)

Flour. I like whole wheat the best.

4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

Baking Powder. I buy the cheap kind.

1/2 teaspoon salt

I buy the good Himalayan salt in bulk and refill this container.

This is what it should look like.  It is not at all like regular dough.  It’s is more liquidy.

mixed-ingredients

Butter or grease the loaf pan or a 12×12 pan.

Pour and spread batter.

Batter in bread pans.

Melt:

1/3 cup butter

Pour over the top of the batter.  This makes a great crust!

Batter with butter poured over.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes.

Voila’. Serve warm with butter.

Voila'

Here is the recipe all together so it is easy to read:

And here is another version, from another cookbook,

if you have some self-rising flour on hand.

3 cups self rising flour

1/2 stick butter (1/4 cup)

Mix all 4 ingredients, pour into greased loaf pan.  Bake at 350 for 45 min.  Pour additional butter over bread and bake 15 more minutes.  Serve warm with butter.

Amen sister! The other thing I have to remember is not to get offended when he doesn’t like something I have cooked. I guess one can always make up for the lack of gourmet skills in other ways. LOL

  2. Ebby says:

So, so very true! Food makes me happy – as it does my family. We are all foodies. I love reading about it and talking about it, cooking it and eating it! Just think of how many of our conversations involve FOOD!

  3. Catherine says:

NOW I’m drooling!! That is yummy!
    Delicious commentary…very, very wise!!

    I like Ebby’s comment…there is another whole topic…FOOD!
    LOL!!!

  4. Allison says:

Gina, Ebby, Catherine – You ladies are great! Yes, hard not to get offended. My husband is actually a better intuitive cook than me so I try to learn his tricks. He says “oh just add a little of this, a little of that.” But I have to write it down or it’s gone into the ether. (sp) And yes, food IS another topic.

  5. Jeannine says:

    YES!!! Bring on the recipes!!!

On the “husband” front . . . I agree they actually are pretty simple creatures. I like to add one more item to your list . . . POINTS . . . they like to feel like they are WINNING with their wife. They like know what earns POINTS with you and go after those. If you tell them Flowers makes points, you’ll get flowers. If you say pink — they’ll be pink! So be careful what you ask for . . . they’re simple, literal, lovely creatures.

  6. Allison says:

    Jeannine-So true, so true!

  7. […] recipe to you. My daughter or I make this bread ALL THE TIME.  I gave you the Beer Bread recipe here.  It is also very quick and good, but I like the soda bread better for a regular bread you can […]
